Hi, I'm Aine Rock

“We don’t want them to feel constrained by the gender stereotypes that really do still permeate today’s culture and a lot of ways and it starts at the very beginning, even before babies are born.” – Kristen Flather

Girls are more than just sparkly pink unicorns. Empowering our girls starts with the messages they receive at home and on their clothes. Kristen Flather, founder and CEO of Makoshey, found that there weren’t a lot of good clothing options that represented the personality and interests of her daughter. Using her background in history, Kristen has created a brand inspired by groundbreaking women from history. Listen to the episode to hear Kristen’s story about transition and pivoting careers..

We live in a society that puts unreasonable expectations on girls starting before they are even born. For new babies and children, most clothing available is on a spectrum of pink. Kristen Flather’s daughter struggled with this issue. Unable to find clothing that spoke to her interests or her unique personality, Kristen had the idea to start her own children’s clothing company.

As a former history teacher, Kristen took inspiration from the stories of strong women throughout history, and incorporated them into her clothing designs. She joined Aine for a discussion on how she was able to mesh two of her passions into a new business that has since become a family affair.

Kristen also talks about how the pandemic has forced her family to slow down and appreciate time together.

Kristen Flather is a history teacher turned small business owner. She started Makoshey, a clothing line for girls, with her husband Fred to offer inspiring, colorful, and comfortable options that break away from the current fashion trends and cliched graphics that dominate the girls retail space. Kristen is a mom to four kids and believes strongly that they should grow up to be anything, like anything, and do anything — and what they wear should reflect those aspirations.
